1304 – 2004: Newburgh’s 700th Anniversary

In 2004 village organisations and residents were delighted to join together to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the Market Charter granted by Edward I to Sir Robert de Lathom.

The logo of Edward I, which is used in the website header, is based on a medieval stained glass window. It was created for the anniversary by a Newburgh resident, Jo Treasure.

         Tapestry of Music

Events began with Newburgh Fair Week. The medieval theme saw villagers in costume, with a procession, medieval entertainment and a banquet. A celebration in words and music of the life of Newburgh featured a specially commissioned suite by John Thornecroft reflecting the themes of country life. Visitors from Newburgh, Indiana, our twin town, included the Little Old Dam Jazz Band.

Newburgh school presented ‘Moving On’, a musical with a historical theme, and the Sports Club hosted a Family Day Out. A Heritage Weekend began with a workshop and concert by Tapestry of Music. A Medieval Market filled the grounds of Moorcroft House, and Morris dancers and strolling players entertained. The Court Leet met at the Red Lion and the Folk Club provided traditional songs. Hare Nurseries held an Open Day with information about medieval plants.

Newburgh School tile project

We gained more information about our history through the Church and village history exhibition. Work by pupils at Newburgh school included a tile project representing aspects of village life. A footpaths walk was organised and a leaflet prepared about the village’s historic buildings. The weekend ended with a concert, again with a local theme and performers.

The final event in the celebrations was the publication of ‘Then and Now’, a record in words and pictures of Newburgh’s historic buildings as they were and are now.

There are two albums of celebration photographs which can be viewed at the Post Office as a reminder of a special year.
